Spring is an important time for the health of our trees in the gulf coast area. With the effects of last year’s drought still lingering, we need to make sure we give our trees a good start to the year. By following these tips you can help ensure that your trees have a healthy, long life in your landscape.

Mulch – Apply 2 – 3 inches of mulch to the base of newly planted trees to protect the root ball, but make sure that the mulch is not all pushed up around the base of the tree. You should be able to see the root collar; a common mistake is to mulch over the root collar which can lead to insect or disease problems. Make sure the area where the trunk flares into the roots is visible and exposed to fresh air. We recommend using a native mulch that is finely shredded. Dyed mulches should be avoided.

Watering – Once the summer heat arrives, we will need to supplement the water the tree receives from rain. It is best to water newly planted trees with a garden hose turned on slightly above a drip and leave it at the base of the tree for 45 minutes – 1 hour, once or twice a week. The goal is to train the tree’s roots to search deep in the soil horizon for moisture. This watering technique helps keep the tree from having large surface roots exposed and can help the tree survive dry spells longer than trees that are watered shallow.

Fertilization – The use of a balanced fertilizer with an N-P-K ratio of 3-1-2 is best. Some common combinations are 15-5-10, 18-6-12 and 21-7-14. Slow release fertilizers are best since they will not burn the sensitive roots, and give a more uniform, long lasting result. Apply the fertilizer based on the manufacturer’s rate for your fertilizer spreader and fertilize all areas under the tree’s canopy plus one additional pass around the outside of the canopy. This will allow the feeder roots to absorb the nutrients evenly. Avoid using Weed & Feed type products; they will damage your trees and shrubs!

Pruning – Pruning is best when completed before the trees break bud, but if you have any branches rubbing on each other, crossing branches or limbs that are a safety hazard, prune them now. Pruning should be done with bypass pruners, not anvil type pruners. You want to make a clean cut, but not flush with the adjoining branch, leave the branch collar where the two joined as this will allow the tree to heal the fastest. Do not raise the canopy or “limb up: newly planted trees” only take care of branches that are rubbing, damaged or a safety hazard. Paints or wound dressings are not necessary and can actually inhibit the trees natural healing process. If in doubt, contact an ISA Certified Arborist.

We have developed a relationship with Aqua Management, an engineering and water management firm. We can now offer an Irrigation control device that uses wireless technology and cloud data storage to efficiently manage and track water use in the Landscape.

We have invested in our own Weather Station, which Aqua Management’s engineers have retrofitted to provide “real time” weather data using their patented wireless modem.

We are already seeing significant reductions of Irrigation water usage, where this system has been installed. The most obvious reductions have been due to the systems ability to control Irrigation settings with remote access and implement shut off during unexpected rain events. We are seeing consistent reductions (ranging from 20- 25 percent), from the transmitted weather data communicating to the controller throughout the night.

We have developed a calculator to produce a mock ROI chart on a case by case basis. Silversand Services would like the opportunity to find out more about your current water costs. We would like to share with you how this substantial return on investment could occur on your property.

“Water is a precious resource with costs that appear to be on the rise. Silversand Services would like to assist in reducing what you are spending on water in 2012”

We’ve picked this winter’s best seasonal color and included white alyssums, yellow calendula, amazon-purple dianthus and more. On the top of that list we included the ever-so-popular, pansy flower. This colorful biennial is a great choice this winter because although they have a shorter lifespan, they are hardy plants and are able to survive freezing temperatures.

Blotch-Face Pansy

Clear-Face Pansy

The pansy flower ranges from 2-3 inches in diameter and can grow up to nine inches long. Pansies come in a variety of colors and bicolors including yellow, gold, orange, purple, violet, red, white, and even black (very dark purple). They also contain distinct face markings that are broken into two types, blotch-face, which contains a dark blotch in the center of the flower, and clear-face, which is simply a solid-color flower without the blotch.

We suggest you mix the two, by grouping all the blotch-face pansies together and all the clear-face pansies together.

Pansies thrive in moist soil and need at least 6 hours of sunlight every day. Their natural enemies include slugs, aphids, snails and fungal diseases. Using a slug repellent or a bowl of beer nearby can help deter slugs from destroying pansies.

Interesting Facts about Pansies

The delicate, sweet fragrance of the pansy flower is most evident in the early morning and at dusk, with the yellow or blue pansy flowers emitting the strongest scent. (Garden Guides)

“Pansy” comes from the French word “pensee,” which means “thought.” It was thus named because the flower, resembling a human face, seems to nod forward as if in deep thought. (Garden Guides)

Both the leaves and flowers of pansies and violas are edible and high in vitamins A and C. They have a taste reminiscent of grapes and mint. (Designs by Susan)

Pansy flowers are used to make syrup, honey and salad because of its strong flavor. (Designs by Susan)
